Modum Fire Escape Ladder

The Modum ladder is made of anodized aluminum profiles and is equipped for wall fastening adjacent to a window or balcony. The ladder rungs are hidden inside the profiles. The ladder looks like a downspout or a 3″ x 2″ wide vertical bar on a wall. Release pins (usually at each story) can be positioned to suit the egress location, independent of standard [adder lengths.

When required the release pin is pulled and the ladder unfolds, under its own weight, down to the ground. For high buildings more ladder sections are bolted together to attain the required height. The MODUM ladder also has a offset section for roof-eaves and buttresses.

Modum Ladder Applications

High Quality and Durability

  • Vertical stiles are extruded aluminum sections made from 6063-T6 aluminum alloy. All fasteners and pins are stainless steel.
  • Ladder rungs are square aluminum tubes with an anti-slip step surface formed from 6063-T6 aluminum alloy.
  • Mounting brackets for flush or offset mounting, masonry and stud wall fastening are available in aluminum with stainless steel hardware.

Easy to use

  • It can only be released from the top floor or at each intermediate floor with the release pin at each egress station.
  • A key activated ground level locking system is available for ground accessibility and security and will not impede the release procedure from above.
  • Access ladder only for ground level release only can be opened with a release pin or with a shackle lock for security purposes.

Simple installation

  • Wall mounting brackets are located every three to four feet apart depending on the ladder length, Extension brackets are available up to nine inches, and eleven inches.
  • Normal mounting, positions the bottom ladder rung about twenty inches above ground level. Ground level contact of the outer stile when open is permissible, say for inside use if desired.

Load Rating

  • The Modum ladder is used as a supplementary means of egress to a height of 30 feet
  • Horizontal rung capacity equals 450 pounds of force

Safety

  • The above-ground (20 inches) mounting of the MODUM ladder means the outer stile does not need ground support in the open position. Therefore the unit can open even if there is a snow/ice build-up, debris or other obstruction on the ground.
  • Luminescent signs are provided at each egress station to identify with picture instruction the fire escape ladder and the safety belt procedure.
  • The safety belt is attached to a glider lock which, in a simple manipulation, is fastened to the outer stile of the ladder. Under normal decent the glider lock will follow downwards or, in the case of ground access, the safety belt can be used to climb up. if a person looses their foothold or slips the glider will lock itself to the outer stile and prevent the fall.
  • A harness for the handicap or disabled is also available.
  • Decal instructions on the ladder’s use and safety are located on the ladder at each egress station.

Test and Code Approval

  • Tested and listed by NS-EN131 for use as a supplementary means of egress up to 30 ft. All tests, including those of four other test labs were conducted with the ladder to open above the ground level for maximum safety to open operation and load-carrying capacity.
